The nature of the Preliminary examination is objective and it is like a screening test.

U nion Public Service Commission conducts the Civil Services Preliminary Examination every year. In this preliminary examination, the applicants for the Civil Services and the Indian Forest Service are included. This exam only serves as a selection mechanism for the selection of the candidates of the main examination, thus the examination functions as a screening test.

There are two question papers in the Civil Services Preliminary Examination and the maximum score is 400. This is a qualifying round and the numbers obtained in it, are not finally added to the total numbers. The final selection in the IAS or Civil Service is based on the scores of Main exam and Interviews.
